Welcome to our Pokemon Go leveling guide! If you’re looking to find out about levelling up your Pokemon, head over to our evolutions guide. This guide covers every aspect of levelling up yourself, the Pokemon trainer! Including different rewards received at each level, the benefits of levelling up, how long it takes and more.
WHAT DOES LEVELLING UP MEAN?
There are three main aims in Pokemon Go; completing your regional and worldwide Pokedex, making your Pokemon as strong as possible, and levelling up your Pokemon trainer – you! Levelling up your trainer takes a lot of time, a lot of playing and a lot of experience points; especially as you reach the higher levels of the game.
Level up as much as you can – the higher the level, the better you’ll become…
There are several benefits to levelling up as a trainer:
- New items – when you reach certain levels, new items become available to you, such as ultra balls (which come in very handy when you start meeting more powerful pokemon) and max revives (which come in very handy when your Pokemon are high level and need reviving after gym battles).
- Better Egg Hatches – Sadly, we don’t mean in terms of Pokemon quality; you’re probably still going to hatch yet another Sudowoodo from that 10km egg you’ve been working on! We mean the level of the Pokemon that hatches gets higher the more you level up; although this is capped once you reach Level 20. Pokemon hatched from eggs can only be as high as this level.
- More Powerful Pokemon – Not only can you power up your Pokemon more the more you level up (see our evolutions guide for information on powering up) but you’ll also start meeting more powerful Pokemon in the wild!
LEVEL UP REWARDS LIST
Levelling up in the early levels is fairly easy if you play the game regularly; however, once you hit the 20’s, the experience requires soon takes a steep rise. The best approach to take is that it’s a marathon and not a sprint; there’s a lot of catching, hatching and spinning to do to reach and the higher levels and if you try and level up too fast, you’re likely to burn yourself out. However, the choice is yours!
Here is a full rundown (provided by the brilliant community of The Silph Road) of exactly how much XP is required to progress past each level, as well as the items you will unlock and items you will receive when you reach a certain level.

MAXING OUT YOUR LEVEL
The maximum level your trainer can reach currently is Level 40. Be warned; maxing out your trainer will take A LOT of time; trainers have achieved it, but it takes hours of dedicated playing every single day to build up the experience points required to make it to the current cap. As you can see from the above chart; once you hit Level 30, the xp required to reach the next level starts to grow dramatically.
When you reach Level 40, you receive a big bundle of items – 40 Ultra balls, 40 max potions, 40 max revives, 40 razz berries, 4 incense, 4 lucky egg’s, 4 egg incubators and 4 lure modules. Once you reach Level 40, that’s it – you’ll continue to gain experience, but the bar will not go up any further and you have reached the level cap. For now that is. As the game continues to expand and trainers reach the promised land of Level 40, we expect a new batch of levels to be made available eventually.
