Welcome to our Pokemon Go Teams guide! Choosing your team is a major decision in Pokemon Go; once you choose your team, you can’t change it. Although if this Niantic reply to an email is anything to go by, it may become an option in the future. For now though, we’ll treat it as a one-time only choice; so choose wisely!
Once you reach the lofty heights of Level 5 and head for a gym, you’ll be greeted by a message asking you to select your Pokemon Go team. You have three teams to choose from; Mystic, Valor and Instinct. There’s not really any benefit to choosing one team over another, aside from how many trainers have selected that team. Current statistics point to Team Mystic being the largest team, followed by Team Valor and then Team Instinct.
Instinct, Mystic or Valor; it’s a tough decision as to who to side with..
Most people’s deciding factor when choosing a team is joining the team which their friends have joined; after all, if you’re on the same team, you’re allies and will be able to help each other in battles, help your team win bonus Premier Balls against raid bosses and can motivate each others Pokemon in gyms.
So, which team should you choose?
MEET THE LEADERS
Each of the Pokemon Go teams has a leader; Blanche of Mystic, Candela of Valor, and Spark of Instinct. When you get the message prompting you to select a team, they’ll each give you their own ‘inspirational’ message to persuade you that their team is the one to choose:
Candela, Blanche and Spark all want to convince you to join them…
- Blanche of Team Mystic says “The wisdom of Pokemon is immeasurably deep. I’m researching why it is that they evolve. My team? With our calm analysis of every situation, we can’t lose!
- Candela of Team Valor says “Pokemon are stronger than humans, and they’re warm-hearted, too! I’m researching ways to enhance Pokemon’s natural power in the pursuit of true strength. There’s no doubt that the Pokemon our team have trained are the strongest in battle!
- Spark of Team Instinct says “Pokemon are creatures with excellent intuition. I bet the secret to their intuition is related to how they’re hatched. Come and join my team. You never lose when you trust your instinct!
If you’re unsure on which team to join and won’t be peer-pressured into joining a certain team by your friends, maybe one of the messages from the Team Leaders will resonate with you and sway you towards them! Although don’t jump in straight away, as there may be one more factor to consider, and it’s an intriguing one.
LEGENDARY BIRD LINK?
You may have noticed by now that each team logo seems to be linked to a bird of some sort. You can also see that the team colours are red, blue and yellow. It seems rather apparent that Mystic have Articuno as their mascot, Valor have Moltres as their mascot and Instinct have Zapdos as their mascot; the legendary bird Pokemon of Generation 1. It’s only speculation at the moment, but it’s very strong speculation.
Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres are thought to represent each Pokemon Go team
It could have something to do with future legendary raids, where each team will have the chance to catch their team’s legendary mascot, or it could just be a mascot! For now though, even though there is strong speculation, it’s to be treated as just that; speculation. It’s worth bearing in mind though if you have a clear favourite when it comes to the legendary bird Pokemon.
WHICH TEAM TO CHOOSE?
As mentioned, there’s really no clear benefit to joining a certain team. If your friends are all Team Mystic though, it’s probably a good idea to ally with them so you can play the game as a team; unless you want to start a friendly(ish) rivalry with your friends and join opposite sides!
If your deciding factor is joining the largest team, then Mystic is currently the front-runner according to this chart, followed by Valor and finally Instinct. Or maybe you want to be an underdog and join Valor or Instinct to help close the gap to the leader?
Which colour will you be choosing; yellow, blue or red?
If your decision is influenced by the potential of a legendary bird capture then Instinct could be the way to go. Zapdos would be the best legendary bird in battle due to its competitive status; not to mention the fact that his electric-typing would zap the flying-type status of both Articuno and Moltres out of the sky!
The choice is yours. Just remember what Pokemon Go is all about; getting outside, exploring the world around you and meeting fellow players! Create friendly rivalries with other players as a Mystic member battling Valor members currently held gyms, or help your Instinct buddies take them both down! Have fun!
